Yayāti and Śarmiṣṭhā: request in ṛtu and discourse on truth and dharma

Kaca said: “Therefore, the desire you cherish will not come to pass as you wish. Never will any son of a ṛṣi take your hand in marriage, O sister. I was speaking of the dharma of the seers; in this condition I was not fit to be cursed by you. Yet today you have cursed me not in accordance with dharma, but under the sway of passion—hence your longing will remain unfulfilled.”

Educational Q&A

The verse contrasts dharma-guided judgment with actions driven by kāma (passion). A curse uttered from desire rather than righteous discernment rebounds ethically: it distorts relationships and brings consequences, here framed as the frustration of the curser’s own marital wish.

Kaca responds to Devayānī’s curse by declaring that her desire will not be fulfilled: no ṛṣi’s son will marry her. He argues that he was speaking according to ārṣa-dharma and was not deserving of a curse, but she cursed him under the influence of passion.
