जतुगृहदाहः — The Burning of the Lac House and the Pāṇḍavas’ Concealed Escape
प्रत्रुहि राजशार्दूल कर्ता हास्मि तथा नृप । अत्यन्तं सख्यमिच्छामीत्याह तं॑ स सुयोधन:,फिर ब्राह्मणोंसे समादृत हो राजा कर्णने उन्हें असीम धन प्रदान किया। राजन्! उस समय उसने कुरुश्रेष्ठ दुर्योधनसे कहा--“नृपतिशिरोमणे! आपने मुझे जो यह राज्य प्रदान किया है, इसके अनुरूप मैं आपको क्या भेंट दूँ? बताइये, आप जैसा कहेंगे वैसा ही करूँगा।” यह सुनकर दुर्योधनने कहा--“अंगराज! मैं तुम्हारे साथ ऐसी मित्रता चाहता हूँ, जिसका कभी अन्त न हो”
prabrūhi rājaśārdūla kartā hāsmi tathā nṛpa | atyantaṁ sakhyam icchāmīty āha taṁ sa suyodhanaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Speak, O tiger among kings; I shall do so, O ruler.” Then Suyodhana said to him: “I desire a friendship with you that is absolute and enduring.” In context, this exchange frames Duryodhana’s political-ethical move: he binds Karṇa through gratitude and alliance, turning a gift of status into a lifelong obligation of loyalty.
