Acquisition of Paśupati–Pāśa Knowledge
Suta Goswami (narrating the Vāyavīyasaṃhitā teaching to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Role: teaching
It states a core Shaiva teaching: bondage is rooted in ajñāna (ignorance) and manifests as duḥkha (suffering). Liberation begins when discernment arises—clear knowledge of what is real—leading the soul toward Shiva-realization and freedom from the pasha (bond).
Linga-worship and Saguna Shiva devotion discipline the mind and purify perception, preparing the seeker for jñāna (right discernment). Through worship, the devotee moves from outer form (saguna upāsanā) toward inner realization of Shiva as the highest reality, which removes ignorance.
The verse points to jñāna-sādhana supported by Shaiva practice: daily Shiva-pūjā with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and japa of the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), combined with meditation on discerning the Real from the unreal to uproot ignorance.
