The Cause of Dakṣa’s Censure of Rudra
Suta Goswami (narrating the Daksha-Sati episode; Daksha is the direct speaker within the narration)
Tattva Level: pasha
Sthala Purana: Dakṣa’s arrogance (ahaṅkāra) and anger (krodha) are portrayed as the psychological ‘pāśa’ that precipitates the yajña-episode; no specific jyotirliṅga is invoked here.
Significance: Functions as a warning: social prestige and ritual status cannot override devotion to Śiva; pride intensifies bondage and leads to spiritual collapse.
Shakti Form: Satī
Role: teaching
It shows how krodha (anger) and ahaṅkāra (ego) become pasha—bondage that blinds one to dharma—leading Daksha to insult and dishonor, which in Shaiva understanding obstructs devotion to Pati (Shiva).
Daksha’s contempt reflects rejection of Shiva’s supremacy; the Purana contrasts such pride with proper reverence to Saguna Shiva (worshipped as Linga), teaching that true honor lies in devotion to Shiva rather than worldly status.
A practical takeaway is to counter anger and pride through japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and cultivating humility before Shiva—inner discipline as the foundation for outer worship.
