Pitṛ-sarga and the Greatness of Śrāddha: The Inquiry
Sanatkumara
Tattva Level: pashu
The verse establishes Sanatkumāra as an authoritative guru in the lineage of Brahmā’s mind-born sons, indicating that genuine Shaiva knowledge is received through a qualified teacher who can guide the seeker toward Pati (Shiva) beyond bondage (pāśa).
By introducing Sanatkumāra as the speaker, the text frames subsequent instruction as guru-given upadeśa—often leading the seeker from reverence to Saguna Shiva (including Linga worship) toward steadiness in realization of Shiva as Pati, the supreme Lord who grants liberation.
The immediate takeaway is guru-sevā and attentive śravaṇa (listening) as the foundation for practice; from this ground, Shaiva disciplines such as japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), meditation, and purity-observances become fruitful.
