Concise Teaching on Liṅga Worship / Śiva-arcana-vidhi
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating Shiva Purana teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Sthala Purana: Instructional frame: the rule for malotsarga should be done in seclusion as received by śruti/smṛti tradition; Sūta promises to explain the inherited procedure—purity as a gateway to worship.
Significance: Highlights humility before tradition (śruta) and the necessity of privacy and propriety—supporting inner purity and readiness for darśana/pujā.
It establishes śauca (purity) as a prerequisite for Shaiva upāsanā: by regulating bodily functions in a proper, secluded manner, the sādhaka steadies the mind and becomes fit for mantra, dhyāna, and worship of Pati (Shiva).
Linga-pūjā emphasizes disciplined preparation—cleanliness, restraint, and focused attention—so the devotee approaches Saguna Shiva with reverence and mental steadiness, rather than distraction or impurity.
A practical preparatory discipline: attend to bodily purification privately and according to rule, then fix the mind (manoniveśa) before beginning Shiva worship, japa (including Om Namaḥ Śivāya), or meditation.
