Prāyaścitta for Mahāpātakas and the Sin-destroying Power of Viṣṇu-smaraṇa
dvitīye'hni ghṛtaṃ prāśya śuddhimāpnoti nārada | vratādimadhye yadyeṣā śrṛṇuyāddhūnimapyuta || 88 ||
Sanatkumara (teaching Narada)
Vrata: general vrata (unspecified)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It links bodily/ritual purity (śuddhi) with vrata-dharma, prescribing ghee on the second day as a purifier and emphasizing that even hearing the sacred recitation during a vow confers merit.
By highlighting śravaṇa (listening) as intrinsically powerful: during vrata practice, even incidental hearing of the sacred teaching is treated as spiritually effective, aligning with bhakti’s emphasis on hearing holy discourse.
It reflects Kalpa-style ritual guidance (vrata-vidhi and śauca): a practical rule about diet (ghṛta) and the timing/setting of recitation-hearing within observances.
