गङ्गाधारणम् (Gaṅgādhāraṇa) — Śiva Bears the Descent of Gaṅgā
एतच्छुत्वा ततो राजन् महाराजो भगीरथः,राजन! यह सुनकर महाराज भगीरथ कैलासपर्वतपर गये और वहाँ उन्होंने तीव्र तपस्या करके कुछ समयके बाद भगवान् शंकरको प्रसन्न किया
etac chrutvā tato rājan mahārājo bhagīrathaḥ | kailāsaparvataṁ gatvā tatra tīvraṁ tapaś cacāra | kālena mahatā devaṁ śaṅkaraṁ toṣayām āsa ||
Mendengar hal itu, wahai Raja, maharaja Bhagīratha berangkat menuju Gunung Kailāsa. Di sana ia menjalani tapa yang sangat berat, dan setelah beberapa waktu ia berhasil menyenangkan Dewa Śaṅkara.
लोगश उवाच
A righteous aim is supported by disciplined effort: intense tapas (self-restraint and perseverance) becomes the ethical means by which divine grace is obtained, showing that devotion is not mere emotion but sustained practice.
After hearing the preceding account, King Bhagīratha goes to Mount Kailāsa and performs severe austerities there; in due course he succeeds in pleasing Lord Śiva (Śaṅkara).
