Vision of the Trimūrti in Rudra, the Gautama Curse, the Manifestation of the Godāvarī, and the Niḥśvāsa-saṃhitā Account
रुद्र उवाच । अस्ति भारतवर्षेण वनं दण्डकसंज्ञितम् । तत्र तीव्रं तपो घोरं गौतमो नाम वै द्विजः ॥ ७१.१० ॥
rudra uvāca | asti bhāratavarṣeṇa vanaṃ daṇḍakasaṃjñitam | tatra tīvraṃ tapo ghoraṃ gautamo nāma vai dvijaḥ || 71.10 ||
रुद्र बोले, भारत में एक जंगल है, दंडक नाम का। वहाँ गौतम नाम का एक ब्राह्मण रहता था। वो बहुत टफ तपस्या करता था।
Rudra
It situates the narrative within Bhārata-varṣa and introduces Daṇḍaka forest as a recognized cultural-geographic setting in Purāṇic literature, using an ascetic figure (Gautama) to anchor the episode’s authority and moral framing.
Daṇḍaka (Daṇḍakāraṇya), a well-known forest region in Sanskrit sources, commonly associated by modern scholarship with parts of central India—often linked broadly with areas spanning present-day Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, and adjoining regions—though exact boundaries vary across texts.
The verse foregrounds tapas (disciplined austerity) as a model of self-regulation and ethical cultivation, presenting ascetic practice in a forest setting as a culturally valued means of pursuing knowledge, restraint, and moral resolve.
