The Sanctity of Gayā: Raibhya’s Encounter and Hymn to Viṣṇu
Gadādhara
tīrthaprabhāva eṣo 'smin brahmaghnasyāpi tatsutaḥ | putaḥ piṇḍapradānena kuryād uddharaṇaṃ punaḥ || 7.23 ||
Varāha (default, instructor voice in the Varāha–Pṛthivī dialogue framework)
It reflects a Purāṇic framework where tīrthas (pilgrimage sites) and śrāddha-related rites are presented as culturally sanctioned means of social-ritual restoration, including for lineages associated with grave transgressions.
No specific tīrtha name appears in this isolated verse; it refers generically to “this” sacred place, which would be identifiable from the surrounding verses in Adhyāya 7.
The verse foregrounds ritual responsibility toward ancestors (piṇḍa offerings) and presents purification and uplift as attainable through prescribed acts, emphasizing restorative ethics rather than irrevocable stigma.
