Sanyasa Upanishad 24: Verse 24
कुटीचकः शिखायज्ञोपवीती दण्डकमण्डलुधरः कौपीनशाटीकन्थाधरः पितृमातृगुर्वाराधनपरः पिठरखनित्रशिक्यादिमात्रसाधनपरः एकत्रान्नादनपरः श्वेतोर्ध्वपुण्ड्रधारी त्रिदण्डी॥२४॥
कुटीचकः । शिखा-यज्ञोपवीती । दण्ड-कमण्डलु-धरः । कौपीन-शाटी-कन्था-धरः । पितृ-मातृ-गुरु-आराधन-परः । पिठर-खनित्र-शिक्य-आदि-मात्र-साधन-परः । एकत्र-अन्न-आदन-परः । श्वेत-ऊर्ध्व-पुण्ड्र-धारी । त्रि-दण्डी ॥२४॥
kuṭīcakaḥ śikhā-yajñopavītī daṇḍa-kamaṇḍalu-dharaḥ kaupīna-śāṭī-kanthā-dharaḥ pitṛ-mātṛ-gurv-ārādhana-paraḥ piṭhara-khanitra-śikya-ādi-mātra-sādhana-paraḥ ekatrānna-ādana-paraḥ śveta-ūrdhva-puṇḍra-dhārī tri-daṇḍī ||24||
कुटीचक संन्यासी छोटी सी झुग्गी में रहता है। वो शिखा रखता है, सर के बाल छोटा करके छोटा सा गुच्छा बना के रखता है। यज्ञोपवीत पहनता है, जनेऊ। दंड और कमंडलू पकड़ के चलता है, लाठी और पानी वाला लोटा। सिर्फ कौपीन, साड़ी और फट्टी हुई चादर पहनता है। अपने माँ-बाप और गुरु की सेवा करता है। सिर्फ एक कटोरा, एक कोदाली, एक झोला, इतना सामान रखता है। खाना भी एक ही जगह से लेता है। माथे पे सफेद तिलक लगाता है। हाथ में तीन लाठियाँ पकड़ के चलता है।
The Kuṭīcaka (renunciant) wears the topknot and the sacred thread; he bears a staff and a water-pot; he wears a loincloth, an upper cloth, and a patched garment; he is devoted to the worship/service of father, mother, and teacher; he is devoted to possessing only such implements as a bowl, a spade, and a sling-bag and the like; he is devoted to receiving food from one place; he wears the white vertical forehead-mark; and he is a bearer of the triple staff.
