स्वायुधः सोतृभिः पूयमानोऽभ्यर्ष गुह्यं चारु नाम । अभि वाजं सप्तिरिव श्रवस्याभि वायुमभि गा देव सोम ॥
svāyudhaḥ sotṛ́bhiḥ pūyámāno ’bhyàrṣa gúhyaṃ cā́ru nā́ma | abhí vā́jaṃ sáptir iva śravasyā́bhi vāyúm abhí gā́ deva soma ||
With his own weapons, purified by the pressers, Soma flow toward the secret, beautiful Name. Rush toward plenitude of force like a swift steed toward fame; rush toward Vāyu; rush toward the Cows (rays), O divine Soma.
Soma is ‘svāyudhaḥ’—armed with inherent power: the purified delight itself becomes a weapon against obscurity. ‘Sotṛbhiḥ pūyamānaḥ’ indicates the active cooperation of inner faculties (pressers) that express and refine the essence. The goal is the ‘guhyaṃ cāru nāma’—the secret and beautiful Name: the hidden truth of the Divine, the mantric reality or essential vibration by which the being is re-formed. Soma is urged to rush toward ‘vāja’—effective force—and toward ‘śravas’—the true fame, i.e., the soul’s recognized truth-being. ‘Abhi vāyum’ points to Vāyu as the life-breath power: Soma must enter and purify prāṇa so that the life-force becomes a carrier of delight and clarity. ‘Abhi gāḥ’ are the Cows as rays of knowledge: the culmination is illumination—recovered lights—so that prāṇa and mind are both fed by Ananda and guided by truth.
When inner joy is actively refined, it becomes a self-empowering force that discovers the hidden divine vibration, energizes life-breath, and releases the rays of knowledge for effective action.
Invocation, Soma-to-Vayu offering, Recovery of rays (go), Secret Name
A classic inner-yogic map: purified Ananda seeks the secret Name (mantric truth), energizes prāṇa (Vāyu), and releases illumination (cows/rays).
Purified essence that empowers the life-breath and reveals hidden truth; catalyst for recovery of light and force.
Ananda as self-armed śakti; mantric potency that quickens prāṇa and opens illumination.
Soma pressing/straining with invocations to Vāyu and the release of ‘cows’ (lights)

44
4×11 (approx.)
Rapid imperative rhythm (‘abhi… abhi… abhi…’) creating a sense of rushing ascent and pursuit.
Strong activation; stimulates breath-energy and aspiration, suitable for breaking inertia.
Recitation during Soma purification and offering sequences where Soma is invited to flow to the gods (notably Vāyu, a prime Soma-drinker) and to bring vāja and ‘cows’ (rays/wealth).
In Pavamāna sequences where Soma is offered in relation to Vāyu (prāṇa) and illumination; during the flowing toward the cups.
Chant while Soma flows; mentally ‘direct’ the current toward prāṇa and toward insight.
A focused mantra for pranayama + japa: direct purified joy into breath, then into insight (rays) and the felt ‘Name’ (inner mantra).
sv-āyudha ‘self-weaponed’: āyudha from √yudh ‘to fight’ > ‘weapon’; indicates inherent capacity rather than borrowed support. arṣa: √ṛṣ ‘to flow, rush’ (also of waters/juice). nāma: nāman ‘name’ as power-formula; RV often treats ‘name’ as a hidden essence (guhya). Vāyu: linked with √vā ‘to blow’; life-wind as conveyer of Soma. gāḥ: go- ‘cow’ also ‘ray/light’ by RV polysemy (root √gā/√gam associations are debated; semantic field stabilized in RV usage).
nāma as hidden essence (guhya nāma), vāja as fullness of power, cows as illuminations (knowledge-rays), prāṇa as mediator (Vāyu)
The ‘secret Name’ implies satya hidden behind appearances; Soma’s purification is the right movement toward it.
Revelation of nāma is revelation of truth-vibration; cows/rays are satya-lights recovered.
Sound/name as creative principle; breath as carrier; light as manifestation.
Mantra-brahman orientation (sound as reality) integrated with Vedic psychology of prāṇa and illumination.
Weapons = spiritual faculties; wind = breath/prāṇa; horse = directed vital speed; cows = rays of insight; secret name = inner mantra/essential vibration.
Direct purified joy into the breath (Vāyu) and toward the inner ‘Name’—a felt mantra or essential vibration—then allow rays of insight to emerge.
Viśuddha (nāma/mantra) + Ājñā (illumination) supported by Anāhata (Ananda) and prāṇic flow through Suṣumṇā (Vāyu).
Brisk-energetic (but controlled) ujjāyī or bhastrikā-light for a few rounds, then silent kumbhaka to ‘touch the Name’; finish with calm nasal breathing.
Activated clarity; aspiration moving upward with breath as vehicle.
1) Begin with a few breaths to feel prāṇa. 2) Recite, imagining Soma as a luminous stream entering the breath. 3) On ‘guhyaṃ cāru nāma’ pause inwardly—listen for the subtle vibration. 4) End by resting in the arising ‘rays’—fresh insights without forcing.
Imperative repetitions (‘abhi… abhi…’) should be clearly articulated with consistent accent; follow pada accents for udatta/anudatta/svarita as transmitted.
Mark the three ‘abhi’ phrases with equal weight; give a slight contemplative softening on ‘guhyaṃ cāru nāma’.
svāyudhaḥ—long ā, visarga at end, sotṛbhiḥ—retroflex ṛ, aspirate bh, pūyamānaḥ—long ū and ā, guhyam—soft h, clear hy cluster, śravasyā—palatal ś, not s, vāyum—long ā, gāḥ—long ā, final ḥ audible
Clear, bright, slightly urgent but controlled; strong consonants
