Soma-pavamāna seer tradition (Mandala 9)
Soma Pavamāna (with solar vastness imagery)
Jagatī (probable)
This short Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he is purified and set in motion toward what is beloved and auspicious, gaining potency through sacred names and human ritual action. Soma is imagined with solar vastness—mounting the Sun’s expansive chariot—then entering golden vessels, shining with the Dawns, and finally empowering Indra to bestow abundance and well-being.
Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Soma begins his purifying course toward what is प्रिय (beloved/cherished), growing in power through sacred ‘names’ and mounting the Sun’s vast expanse as a discerning force.
The hymn shifts into vivid ritual movement: Soma shines downward, ‘calls’ to the jars, and is guided by the priests into the golden vessel; Ṛta’s ‘milkings’ resound to him as he takes his seat.
Soma’s radiance blossoms with the Dawns—purification becomes cosmic illumination, linking rite, Ṛta, and sunrise-like expansion.
The poet petitions Soma to stream for well-being, to wrap the people in blessing, and—through Soma’s ecstasies—to impel Indra to grant mighty abundance.
ā sūryasya bṛhato bṛhann adhi ratham viṣvañcam aruhat vicakṣaṇaḥ
kośa ā hiraṇyaye … uṣaso vi rājati
indraṃ codaya dātave magham
It praises Soma while he is being purified (pavamāna), describing his shining flow into ritual vessels and his expansion into solar-like vastness, ending with a request for well-being and wealth.
These are the ritual containers for purified Soma. The imagery emphasizes that the offering becomes luminous and powerful as it is clarified and collected for the gods.
In Vedic ritual, Soma’s exhilaration (mada) strengthens Indra. The hymn asks Soma to spur Indra so that Indra grants “magha”—mighty abundance and generosity to the worshippers.
