Sukta 64

Sukta 9.64

Rishi

Traditionally: Soma Pavamāna seers (specific attribution varies by recension/Anukramaṇī for Pavāmāna hymns); primary voice is the inspired ritual-poetic lineage addressing purified Soma.

Devata

Soma Pavamāna (purifying Soma as divine delight and clarifying power).

Chandas

Likely Triṣṭubh (based on verse cadence typical for RV 9.64; requires pada-count verification by full metrical scan).

RV 9.64 praises Soma Pavamāna as he is pressed, filtered, and made radiant—an invigorating “bull” power that establishes ṛta (true order) and awakens clear vision. The hymn follows the movement of the Soma drops through purification toward their vast goal (the “ocean”), asking that this clarified delight become light, strength, and well-being for the sacrificers.

Inside Sukta 64

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is hailed as the luminous bull-power—divine, steadfast in will—who establishes the laws of truth/order within the worshippers.

  2. Development

The hymn tracks Soma’s dynamic motion: the drops are driven forward, purified, made swift and brilliant, and directed toward their great receptacle, while the poets ask for strength, inspiration, and right order.

  3. Climax

The release into vastness—Soma rushing ‘to the ocean’—becomes a revelation of expansive consciousness and cosmic circulation of sacred delight.

  4. Where it settles

Soma is entreated to flow for well-being and to become ‘a Sun for vision,’ concluding in the request for clarified sight, safety, and enduring auspiciousness.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma as the self-purifying, flowing deity—pressed and filtered, shining with dyumna (luminous power), praised as a vṛṣan (bull) who strengthens gods and men and upholds dharmāṇi/ṛta through his clarified stream.
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality and inspired order: he moves from plant to press to filter to offering, quickening Indra and the gods, and renewing the world through the circulation of sacred delight and truth-bearing power.
  • Inner significanceThe mind’s nectar when refined: impulses and emotions are ‘filtered’ into clarity, courage, and right discernment; Soma becomes inner light (sūrya) for true seeing and stable will.

The seer

  • Pavamāna Soma seers (Soma Pavamāna tradition)Collective/ritual-poetic authorship of Mandala 9 hymns that accompany Soma’s purification (pavamāna) and articulate Soma as both sacrament and deity.
