Sukta 52

Sukta 6.52

Rishi

Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya) tradition (Mandala 6 affiliation; hymn to Viśve Devāḥ)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (dominant in Mandala 6; this verse conforms to triṣṭubh cadence)

This hymn to the Viśve Devāḥ gathers the whole divine host to hear the poet’s speech, protect the rite, and grant well-being to the sacrificer. A sharp polemical edge runs through it: the brahma-dviṣ (hater of sacred word) and the misguided or overreaching offerer are to be pressed down and made to fall away from the path. The sukta culminates in a formal invitatory scene at the kindled Agni, where the All-Gods are asked to rejoice in the oblation and in the community’s sacred assembly.

Inside Sukta 52

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A forceful repudiation of false measures and misplaced religiosity, calling for the divine ‘firm powers’ to press down the misguided/overreaching offerer and the anti-brahman tendency.

  2. Development

The hymn shifts from polemic to prayer: the All-Gods are asked to draw near, hear the inspired utterances, and become kindly and healing—protecting the sacrificer and the rite from hostility.

  3. Climax

A formal liturgical tableau: barhis is spread, Agni is kindled, and the poet serves with a well-made hymn and great reverence, summoning the Viśve Devāḥ into the present assembly.

  4. Where it settles

The All-Gods are invited to take delight in the offering, sealing the rite with communal participation, divine satisfaction, and the hoped-for removal of disruptive forces.

The deity: Viśve Devāḥ

  • In the VedaThey are addressed as near-coming, benevolent powers who listen to the poet’s giras (utterances) and respond with sumṛḷīkā (gracious healing-kindness).
  • Cosmic functionTo harmonize and coordinate divine powers in sustaining order, safeguarding the sacrifice, and ensuring the right distribution of boons—prosperity, protection, and right-mindedness—for the community.
  • Inner significanceThe integrated wholeness of higher faculties: when the ‘all-gods’ are invoked, scattered energies of will, insight, and vitality are unified; hostility to brahman (truthful, disciplined speech) is treated as a psychic and social disorder to be restrained.

The seer

  • Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya tradition)Bharadvāja gotra; Bārhaspatya (Bṛhaspati-linked) line within the Bharadvāja family · Principal seer-family of Maṇḍala 6, noted for powerful sacrificial theology, precise ritual diction, and hymns that defend brahman (sacred utterance) as an effective force.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are the “All-Gods,” a collective address to the divine powers together. The hymn calls them to come near, hear the recited words, protect the sacrifice, and grant well-being.

Brahma-dviṣ means “hater of brahman,” i.e., one who opposes sacred truth-speech and the right order it supports. The hymn asks the divine powers to restrain and remove this hostile force so the rite can succeed.

It fits an invitatory moment in fire-worship: the barhis is spread, Agni is kindled, and the All-Gods are invoked to attend and rejoice in the offering. It is especially apt when seeking protection of the rite and harmony in the assembly.
