Outer meaning

O Agni, gather and hand over these ninety-thousand (offerings/energies) as a share to Indra the strong. Knowing the seasonal paths, the godward ways, place our offering in heaven among the gods.

Inner meaning

Agni is asked to consolidate the amassed energies of practice and deliver them to Indra—the illumined governing Mind-force—so the power can act effectively. Agni ‘knows the paths’ (ṛtuśaḥ devayānān): the right timings and right inner passages by which consciousness ascends. The offering is to be established in the luminous plane (divi deveṣu): stabilized as a permanent attainment, not a passing experience.

Universal truth

Energy must be rightly distributed: aspiration (Agni) hands its gathered force to illumination (Indra) for right governance. True progress follows rhythms and right timing; realization must be seated in a higher poise to endure.

Themes

offering-and-ascent, R̥ta-in-time, Indra-augmentation, establishment-in-heaven

Rishi
Devāpi Ārṣṭiṣeṇa (traditional for the hymn; this verse’s ascription varies in some listings)
Lineage
Ārṣṭiṣeṇa (probable)
Other hymns
Rig Veda 10.98.1-12

Family tradition

Transmission-focused: Agni as mediator handing force to Indra; emphasis on right paths (ṛtu).

Significance

The seer highlights an inner economy: gathered tapas must be entrusted to illumined governance, and the gain must be seated in the higher world to become lasting.

Devata
Agni (mediator) with Indra (recipient)
Epithets
Agne, vṛṣṇe indrāya (puissant Indra)
Related deities
Ṛta/Ṛtus (cosmic rhythms), Viśve Devāḥ (heavenly powers among whom the offering is placed)

Cosmic role

Agni transmits offerings upward; Indra wields the received force to establish victory and right order; together they complete ascent and effective action.

Inner power

Agni = integrative will; Indra = directive illumination. Their cooperation turns raw energy into luminous mastery.

Where it is used

Offering-transfer motif within soma/fire rites: Agni conveys shares to specific deities (here Indra)
