Indra (implied by adri-vaḥ) / Manyu as Indra’s wrath-power
This short hymn praises Indra through his Manyu—his first-born wrath-power that shattered Vṛtra and released the pent-up waters, making even Heaven and Earth tremble. It then turns to the social and ritual sphere, asking Indra to heed generous patrons and to expand the worshippers’ space, wealth, protection, and fair apportionment like a benevolent father.
Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Indra is the main deity, but the hymn highlights Manyu as Indra’s primal wrath-power—the force by which he defeats Vṛtra and releases the waters.
On the cosmic level it recalls Indra breaking Vṛtra’s obstruction so waters can flow; inwardly it points to breaking inner blocks so energy, clarity, and inspiration can move freely.
It asks Indra to act with orderly wisdom and fairness—“not a deceiver”—so prosperity is protected and distributed rightly, like a benevolent guardian and father.
