Sukta 1.44

Devata

Agni

RV 1.44 is a dawn-linked Agni hymn that kindles the sacred fire as the divine messenger, asking him to bring the gods who awaken with Uṣas and to bestow “many-hued” prosperity on the generous worshipper. As the praise unfolds, Agni is invoked in a broad morning constellation—Savitṛ, Uṣas, the Aśvins, Bhaga, the Maruts, and Varuṇa—so that the rite becomes a coordinated welcoming of divine powers into the Soma sacrifice and the order of ṛta.

Inside Sukta 44

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is hailed as immortal and dawn-awakening; he is asked to grant many-hued prosperity and to bring the gods to the giver.

  2. Development

Agni’s role expands from personal benefactor to ritual organizer: he is kindled by the Kāṇvas in both dawnings and nights, alongside a constellation of deities who govern light, fortune, and timely aid.

  3. Climax

The hymn reaches a communal invitation where multiple divine powers are gathered—Maruts hearing the stoma and Varuṇa drinking Soma—signaling the sacrifice as a unified act under ṛta.

  4. Where it settles

The assembly is harmonized “together” (sajūḥ): the rite culminates in shared participation, confirming Agni as the central link that completes the offering and the divine presence.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is Jātavedas (“knower of births”), the havyavāha (“carrier of oblations”), the flame-tongued priest who is kindled at dawn and who conveys human praise and offerings to the gods.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between earth and heaven, establishing the sacrifice, transmitting offerings, and sustaining ṛta by linking human order with divine order through the fire-rite.
  • Inner significanceAgni signifies awakened will and luminous intelligence—the inner fire that rises with dawn, clarifies intention, and carries aspiration from the human heart toward the divine.

The seer

  • Kaṇva (Kāṇva seer)Kāṇva (descendants of Kaṇva; a prominent Ṛgvedic priestly family) · The Kāṇvas are renowned for Agni- and Soma-centered hymns that are closely tied to the practical conduct of sacrifice, especially the morning kindling and the invitation of multiple deities through Agni as hotṛ and messenger.
