Sukta 54
kāláḥ ha bhūtáṃ bhávyam ca putró ajanayat purā́ | kālād ŕcaḥ sám abhavan yájuḥ kālād ajāyata
Time, verily, as a Son, begat of old both what hath been and what shall be. From Time the Ṛc-verses came to full being; from Time the Yajus was born.
Rishi: Traditionally ascribed in AV tradition to a late Atharvanic seer (often treated as anonymous/Ātharvaṇa in late speculative hymns).
Devata: Kāla (Time), personified as supreme principle
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (predominant late-book cadence; mixed/late style possible)
Primary: adbhuta
Secondary: shanta
Sāyaṇa treats Kāla as the supreme causal principle (parama-kāraṇa) from which past and future proceed. ‘Putraḥ’ is taken not as a subordinate but as ‘offspring-producing’ (janaka-svarūpa), emphasizing generativity. Ṛc and Yajus are not merely texts but efficacious forms of sacred speech (mantra-śakti) arising from Time as their ultimate source.
To establish Kāla as the supreme ordering power, thereby securing ritual legitimacy and cosmic stability for the patron and rite.
Time-perspective therapy / acceptance-based approaches that reduce distress by reframing change and impermanence.
paustika
Patron/ritual context needing stability and right timing.
Establish Kāla as supreme source to secure cosmic legitimacy, stability, and prospering continuity of rites and life projects.
Theogonic assertion: naming the ultimate source functions as a stabilizing ‘seal’ over ritual and life.
Ritual failure through mistiming; existential anxiety; instability in plans.
Long-term prosperity through alignment with time; continuity of tradition.
Time (Kāla), personified, as a ‘Son’ generated both the past (bhūta) and the future (bhavya) in ancient days. From Time the Ṛc verses came into being; from Time the Yajus was born.
The mind’s sense of identity is bound to time: memory and anticipation. By enthroning Kāla as prior even to sacred speech, the psyche relaxes its struggle with change and accepts process as the womb of meaning.
All forms—events, language, ritual—unfold within time. Recognizing time as the condition for both tradition and innovation stabilizes life: one can act rightly without clinging to fixed outcomes.
Contemplation of temporality: witnessing arising/passing of thoughts as ‘kāla-flow.’
sahasrara
quiet natural breathing; count 12 breaths while reflecting on past/future dissolving into present awareness
Non-reactive spaciousness; time as appearance in awareness.
Recite once, then sit for a minute observing how memory (bhūta) and anticipation (bhavya) arise and subside within awareness.
Even, declarative; slight rise on kālaḥ and gentle fall at pāda ends to mark aphoristic closure.
Separate key terms: bhūtaṃ | bhavyaṃ; kālād | ṛcaḥ; kālād | yajuḥ.
Hold long ā in kālo, kālāt., Keep clear aspirates: bhūtaṃ, bhavyaṃ., Articulate ṛc-aḥ with vocalic ṛ (ऋ).
Grave, steady, contemplative.
This is a ‘framing’ mantra: its power is cognitive-cosmic alignment rather than immediate operative expulsion or attraction.
1
Impatience, fear about the future, regret about the past; starting long projects.
At the start of the day, before planning, or before major commitments.
Patience, steadier decision-making, improved sense of order and timing.
Avoid fatalism; Kāla-doctrine supports right action within time, not passivity.
