Agnisamutpattiḥ nāmāni ca (Havyavāhanasya nāmāni)
Cosmogony and Ritual-Etiology
Yeh adhyaya batata hai ki devi devta kahan se aaye aur unke naam kaise bane. Narayan ne khud ko badla aur panch bade elements banaye - aag, hawa, akash, paani aur dharti. Brahma ji gusse se aag utpi aur use yagya ka kaam diya. Brahma ji ne Agni ko kayi naam diye jaise Garhapatya aur Vaishvanara. Yagya ki aag insani jeevan ko sahi raste par laye. Isse samajh aata hai ki aag hamare liye kitna zaroori hai.

A formal, catechistic inquiry asks for the origins, embodied forms, and ritual designations of multiple deities tied to body and cosmos—especially Agni—and asks under what conditions worship yields well-being and right outcome (sadgati).
A cosmogonic exposition: Nārāyaṇa’s self-modification unfolds the pañcamahābhūtas (fire, wind, space, water, earth) and culminates in the brahmāṇḍa, establishing a universe whose stability depends on ordered functions and mediations.
An etiological episode explains Agni’s birth from Brahmā’s intense anger and Agni’s subsequent ‘domestication’ into Vedic ritual life. Brahmā assigns Agni specific sacrificial roles and liturgical names (e.g., Gārhapatya, Dakṣiṇāgni, Vaiśvānara), defining Agni as havyavāhana/kavyavāhana and making yajña a civilizational technology that sustains cosmic and social order.
No explicit historical toponyms or river systems are named in this adhyāya; the setting is primarily cosmological (triloka; brahmāṇḍa) and ritual (household/fire-altar context implied by Gārhapatya and Dakṣiṇāgni).
The text frames cosmic formation and ritual practice as mutually reinforcing: the emergence of the elements culminates in an ordered world, and Agni—regulated through named functions—becomes the medium by which humans sustain reciprocity with the cosmic order (through havya/kavya conveyance) and seek “sadgati.”
No explicit tithi, lunar phase, seasonal timing, or calendrical marker is specified in the provided passage. The chapter instead emphasizes functional classifications of fire (e.g., Dakṣiṇāgni, Gārhapatya) and the act of offering (havya/kavya) without dating rites to particular calendrical units.
Environmental balance is implied through the cosmogonic sequence: earth (pṛthivī) arises through the consolidation and hardening of the elements, and the narrative positions yajña—mediated by Agni—as a stabilizing institution that organizes human consumption, offering, and redistribution. This can be read as an early model linking terrestrial formation, resource transformation (heat/fire), and regulated exchange.
The principal figures are Prajāpāla (questioner), Mahātapā (respondent), Nārāyaṇa, and Brahmā. The chapter also references deities and classes invoked in ritual discourse (e.g., Āditya, Candramas, Pitṛs, Aśvins, Durgā, Viṣṇu, Dharma), but it does not provide dynastic genealogies or identifiable historical royal lineages in the supplied text.
