Sukta 5.22
Atri (Ātreya) (explicitly referenced atri-vat; hymn in Atri collection)
Agni
Trishtubh (probable; verify in critical edition)
Atri ne Agni ko bulaya hai, jo ek pavitra agni hai. Wo Agni se kehte hain ki hamari baat suno aur hamare yagya ko sweekar karo. Agni sabse pasandida purohit hain jo yagya karte hain. Unka dimag bahut tej hai, wo sahi galat samajhte hain. Atri parivar Agni ki stuti karta hai aur unke liye gaate hain. Wo chahte hain ki Agni unke saath rahe aur unki madad kare.
Mantra 1
प्र विश्वसामन्नत्रिवदर्चा पावकशोचिषे । यो अध्वरेष्वीड्यो होता मन्द्रतमो विशि ॥
Sab gaao, Atri ki tarah, saaf karne wali aag ke liye. Jo yagya mein dhunda jaata hai aur puja jaata hai, woh purohit hai, sabse zyada khushi dene wala, logon mein. Use hum apni baat se pakka karte hain.
Mantra 2
न्यग्निं जातवेदसं दधाता देवमृत्विजम् । प्र यज्ञ एत्वानुषगद्या देवव्यचस्तमः ॥
Agni ko bithao, jisko sab jaante hain. Woh devta logon ka pujari hai, sahi time par puja karne wala. Aaj yagya aage badho. Agni devta logon mein sabse zyada phailta hai, woh raasta dikhaye.
Mantra 3
चिकित्विन्मनसं त्वा देवं मर्तास ऊतये । वरेण्यस्य तेऽवस इयानासो अमन्महि ॥
Tum devta ho, tumhara dimaag saaf hai. Hum insaan tumhari madad ke liye soch mein rakhe hain. Hum usko choose karna chahte hain jo sahi hai. Hum tumhari taraf dekh ke haan keh diye hain.
Mantra 4
अग्ने चिकिद्ध्यस्य न इदं वचः सहस्य । तं त्वा सुशिप्र दम्पते स्तोमैर्वर्धन्त्यत्रयो गीर्भिः शुम्भन्त्यत्रयः ॥
Agni, suno humari baat, tum taqatwale ho. Tum ghar ke malik ho, Atri rishi log tumhare gun gaake tumhe bada karte hain. Unke gaano se tum aur chamakne lagte ho.
It is a short hymn where the Atri seers praise Agni as the purifying fire and the Hotar of the sacrifice, asking him to accept their words and protect the rite.
It marks the hymn as belonging to the Atri tradition and invokes the authority of that lineage’s style of praise—implying the chant is offered in the proper, time-tested way.
In Vedic thought, praise and ritual speech actively strengthen Agni’s presence: the fire brightens outwardly, and the divine help (avas/ūti) becomes more accessible to the worshippers.
