Sukta 10.165
Traditionally associated with Atharvanic/late book (Mandala 10) apotropaic seers; specific r̥ṣi attribution varies by Anukramaṇī for this hymn (often given as a late/anonymous tradition).
Devas in general; with explicit reference to Nirr̥ti as the adverse power being averted.
Triṣṭubh (probable; RV 10 frequently uses Triṣṭubh in such stanzas—exact metrical scan recommended for confirmation).
Is mantra mein sab Deva ko bulaya gaya hai. Ek kabootra dikha jo bura shakun maana gaya. Usko Nirr̥ti ka paigham samjha, jo musibat ka naam hai. Mantra ke zariye is buri nishani ko hataya gaya hai. Do paon wale aur chaar paon wale sab jeev surakshit rahen. Yeh vishesh kar agni ke aas paas ke liye hai.
Mantra 1
Bhagwan, agar yeh kabootar kisi buri taakat ka paigam laaya hai, toh hum use door bhejne ke liye yeh paath bol rahe hain. Yeh kabootar kisi buraai ka dho ta hai, isliye hum use bhaga rahe hain. Humein do paon wale aur chaar paon wale sab par shaanti mile. Saari duniya surakshit rahe.
Mantra 2
Buri taakat humein pakad nahi paayegi. Woh aag ke paas jaake apna kaam kare, humein chhod de. Humare paas wale aur log sab theek rahein. Bhagwan, yeh kabootar humein takleef na de.
Mantra 4
Ullu ki awaaz ka koi matlab nahi. Kabootar ne aag ke paas jo nishani chhodi hai, woh bhi bekaar hai. Yeh sab kisi buri taakat ka kaam hai. Mrityu devta ko namaskar hai. Buraai yahan nahi, kahin aur jaaye.
Mantra 5
Is mantra se kabootar ko bhaga do, bahut door le jaao. Saari buri cheezein uske saath chali jaayen. Humari taakat safe rahe. Woh kabootar jaldi se udke chala jaaye.
In this sukta the pigeon is treated as a possible bad omen—an apparent ‘messenger’ of Nirr̥ti (misfortune). The hymn uses mantra to send that omen away and restore peace.
Nirr̥ti is a Vedic power associated with loss, decay, and misfortune. Here she is not praised; she is the adverse force to be averted so that well-being (śam) returns.
It is a compact blessing for the whole community: humans (two-footed) and animals like cattle and horses (four-footed). The hymn asks that all embodied life in the household remain safe and prosperous.
