(Ayodhya’s Tremor of Grief and Omens)
Jab Rama haath jod ke nikle to mahal mein rone ki awaazein uthin. Dasharatha ne ye awaazein suni aur dukh aur badh gaya. Pure Ayodhya mein logon ne khana banana chhod diya. Havan ki ag bhi bujh gayi aur sab kaam ruk gaya. Janwar bhi dukhi the, hathi ne khana chhoda aur gayein bacchon ko doodh nahi pilayi. Taare murjha gaye aur grah chamakna band kar diye. Aas-paas andhera sa lag raha tha. Ayodhya aise hil rahi thi jaise koi rakshak hi nahi bacha.
Verse 1
Jab woh chal diye, haath jode hue.
Yeh log bilkul akeli the, kamzor the, bahut dukhi the. Ram hi unka sahare the, unka aasra tha. Ab woh kahan ja rahe hain? Hum kya karenge?
Verse 3
Woh kahan gaya jo gaaliyan sun ke bhi gussa nahi karta? Jo logon ko gussa dilane wali baatein nahi karta? Jo gusse mein bhi sabko shaant karta hai? Jo doosron ke gham mein shaamil hota hai?
Verse 4
Woh bada aadmi kahan gaya? Jo humare saath waise hi pesh aata tha jaise apni maa Kausalya ke saath.
Verse 5
Woh kahan gaya jo is duniya ka aur in logon ka rakshak tha?
Verse 6
Hai re, raja ka dimaag kaam nahi kar raha. Woh Ram ko jungle bhej raha hai. Ram jise sab log bahut pyaar karte hain. Woh dharam ke kaam mein seedha hai, aur hamesha sach bolta hai.
Verse 7
Woh sab raniyan ro padi. Dukh se bahut takleef mein thi. Jaise gaaye ka baccha mar jaye aur woh roye, waise hi woh chillake royi.
Verse 8
Kisi ne puja ki agni nahi jalayi. Ghar wale khana nahi pakaya. Log apna kaam nahi karte the. Aur suraj bhi dikhna band ho gaya.
Verse 10
Haathi ne khana giraya, gaye ne bachche ko doodh nahi pilaya. Maa ko bhi pehle bete mein khushi nahi mili. Sab ka dil bhaari tha.
Verse 11
Trishanku, Lohitanga, Brihaspati aur Budha, yeh sab grah ekdum dhamake ke saath khade ho gaye. Woh sab Chand ke paas pahunch gaye the. Aisa lag raha tha jaise koi bada attack ho.
Verse 12
Taare apni chamak kho baithe. Graho mein bhi wo tej nahi raha. Aasman mein Vishakha dikhne lagi, aise jaise dhuan mein lapeta hua ho. Sab kuch andhera sa lagne laga.
Verse 13
Jab Rama van chala gaya, toh poora shehar hil gaya. Aisa laga jaise bada samundar uth khada ho. Kali hawa chal rahi thi aur shehar darr ke maare kaanpne laga.
Verse 14
Charo disha ghul si gayi, jaise koi andhera chha gaya ho. Na koi grah dikh raha tha, na koi taara. Aasman mein kuch bhi nahi chamak raha tha. Sab sunsaan ho gaya.
Verse 15
Achanak shehar ke log bahut dukhi ho gaye. Koi khane ka mann nahi kar raha tha. Koi masti nahi kar raha tha. Sab itne udas the ki kuch achha bhi nahi lag raha tha.
Verse 16
Ayodhya mein sab log bahut dukhi the. Ek ke baad ek takleef aa rahi thi. Woh bar-bar lambi saans le rahe the. Sab apne raja ke liye ro rahe the.
Verse 17

Verse 19
Bete apni maa ka dhyaan nahi rakhte the. Pati apni biwi ka khayal nahi rakhte the. Bhai apne bhai ko chhod ke chale gaye. Sabne sab kuch chhod diya. Bas Ram ka hi naam le rahe the.
Verse 20
Ram ke jo dost the, sab ka dimaag ghoom gaya tha. Gham itna bhaari tha ki sab kuchh tod ke rakh diya. Us waqt koi bhi bistar se utha nahi.
Verse 21
Phir Ayodhya kaanpne lagi, jaise koi bada aadmi chala gaya ho. Ram ke bina sheher darr aur gham mein doob gaya. Haathi, ghode aur sainik sab chillane lage.
The pivotal action is Rāma’s formal departure—marked by folded palms—signaling disciplined acceptance of exile; the ethical tension is the city’s recognition that its protector is leaving due to royal compulsion and vow-bound duty.
The chapter illustrates that dharma is not merely private virtue but a stabilizing public force: when the dharmic center withdraws, rituals, livelihoods, and even social attachments disintegrate, revealing the interdependence of ethics and civic order.
Key markers include Ayodhyā itself, the antaḥpura (women’s quarters) as the first locus of lament, the rājamārga (public thoroughfare) as the civic stage of grief, and agnihotra as the ritual baseline whose cessation signifies societal paralysis.
