asamānapravarairvivāha iti gautamaḥ | yadyekaṃ pravaraṃ bhinnaṃ mātṛgotravarasya ca | tatrodvāho na kartavyaḥ sā kanyā bhaginī bhavet
Gautama (cited authority)
Listener: dvija/gṛhastha audience
Scene: Gautama as lawgiver gestures to a pravara list; two scrolls labeled ‘mātṛ-gotra’ and ‘vara-gotra’ show one shared ṛṣi name highlighted; the prospective bride is shown with rakṣā (protective) symbolism, indicating ‘bhaginī’ status.
Dharma extends kinship-respect beyond the obvious; even partial maternal-line overlap is treated as sibling-like and thus inviolable.
None; this is a dharma-legal instruction.
A prohibition: do not marry when even a single pravara overlaps with the mother’s gotra-line.
