Adhyaya 116: An Exposition on the Causes of Happiness and Suffering

Sukhaduḥkhanirūpaṇa

Ethical-Discourse (Dharma, Vows, and Social Conduct)

Inside Adhyaya 116

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Varāha addresses Pṛthivī (Vasundharā) in a normative, didactic mode, proposing that sukha and duḥkha arise from discernible causes rooted in karma, inner disposition, and social duty.

  2. Central event

A paired ethical typology is laid out: (1) a disciplined regimen of prescribed action performed with ekāgratā (single-mindedness), humility, self-control, and tithi-based restraints (dietary and sexual) and (2) a contrasting catalogue of moral-social failures framed through the refrain “tato duḥkhataraṃ nu kim,” highlighting neglect of Viṣṇu-surrender, hospitality, offerings, and non-harm.

  3. Climax resolution

The discourse turns to the counter-refrain “tato saukhyataraṃ nu kim,” ranking stabilizing virtues—atithi-satkāra, monthly pitṛ-satisfaction on amāvāsyā, ahiṃsā, equanimity, contentment, restraint, and honoring parents—as the most fortunate supports of social order and Earth’s moral ecology.

Geographical context

No explicit toponyms or regional ecological zones are named in this adhyāya. The setting is dialogic and normative, addressed to Pṛthivī (Earth) as a cosmic-terrestrial interlocutor rather than tied to a specific pilgrimage landscape.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualGṛhya-dharma observance combining vaiśvadeva/atithi-satkāra with tithi-based vrata restraints and amāvāsyā pitṛ-tarpaṇa (monthly ancestral satisfaction).
  • BenefitProduces sukha through karmic purification and social harmony: reduced conflict and excess, strengthened household reciprocity (guest-care), sustained ancestral continuity (amāvāsyā satisfaction), and a stable moral ecology supportive of Pṛthivī’s order.

The narrative frame

  • VarāhaPṛthivī (Vasundharā) · Didactic, comparative, and admonitory—using refrain-like rankings (“tato duḥkhataraṃ nu kim” / “tato saukhyataraṃ nu kim”) to intensify moral evaluation.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (didactic tranquility with moral gravity)
  • Emotional ProgressionFrom sober instruction on disciplined living → sharp moral censure via escalating ‘more painful than this’ comparisons → reassurance and uplift through ‘more fortunate than this’ exemplars that restore ethical confidence and communal steadiness.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityNot tirtha-specific; best approached as a household-practice chapter. If desired, observe it in any Viṣṇu temple or at home by aligning vows and offerings with local amāvāsyā and dvādaśī calendars.
  • Related FestivalAmāvāsyā (monthly pitṛ observance) and Dvādaśī/Vaiṣṇava observance days (as per local pañcāṅga).

Frequently Asked Questions

The text models sukha and duḥkha as outcomes of karma shaped by inner disposition and social duty: humility (absence of ahaṅkāra), sense-restraint, contentment, and disciplined observance lead to well-being, while neglect of devotion, hospitality, equitable conduct, and non-harm produces intensified suffering. The repeated comparative refrains function as a didactic device to rank behaviors by their social and existential consequences.

The chapter specifies lunar and calendrical markers for restraint and observance: dvādaśī (noted for dietary regulation and abstaining from maithuna), ṣaṣṭhī, aṣṭamī, amāvāsyā, and caturdaśī (days associated with further restraint). It also references the timing of vaiśvadeva and the monthly amāvāsyā as a recurring day when pitṛs (ancestors) are said to be satisfied through proper offerings.

Although it does not describe landscapes, the chapter frames ethics as Earth-relevant by addressing Pṛthivī directly and emphasizing restraint-based virtues (ahiṃsā, self-control, moderated consumption, and regulated sexuality) that limit harm and social conflict. In a digital-ecological reading, these norms function as a moral ecology: reducing violence and excess supports communal stability, which the narrative implicitly treats as beneficial for terrestrial order represented by Pṛthivī.

No dynastic lineages, named kings, or specific sages are cited. The cultural references are institutional and ritual: vaiśvadeva (household offering context), atithi (guest), pitṛ (ancestors), and varṇa categories (brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya) appear as social frames for ethical evaluation rather than as historical personages.
