हिरण्यगर्भाधिष्ठितविक्षेपशक्तितस्तमोद्रिक्ता अहङ्काराभिधा स्थूलशक्तिरासीत्। तत्प्रतिबिम्बितं यत्तद्विराटचैतन्यमासीत्। स तदभिमानी स्पष्टवपुः सर्वस्थूलपालको विष्णुः प्रधानपुरुषो भवति। तस्मादात्मन आकाशः सम्भूतः। आकाशाद्वायुः। वायोरग्निः। अग्नेरापः। अद्भ्यः पृथिवी। तानि पञ्च तन्मात्राणि त्रिगुणानि भवन्ति॥६॥

IAST Transliteration

hiraṇyagarbhādhiṣṭhitavikṣepaśaktitas tamodriktā ahaṅkārābhidhā sthūlaśaktir āsīt | tatpratibimbitaṃ yat tad virāṭcaitanyam āsīt | sa tadabhimānī spaṣṭavapuḥ sarvasthūlapālako viṣṇuḥ pradhānapuruṣo bhavati | tasmād ātmana ākāśaḥ sambhūtaḥ | ākāśād vāyuḥ | vāyor agniḥ | agner āpaḥ | adbhyḥ pṛthivī | tāni pañca tanmātrāṇi triguṇāni bhavanti ||6||

Translation

હિરણ્યગર્ભાધિષ્ઠિત વિક્ષેપ-શક્તિમાંથી તમઃપ્રધાન ‘અહંકાર’ નામની સ્થૂલ-શક્તિ ઉત્પન્ન થઈ. તેમાં પ્રતિબિંબિત ચૈતન્ય વિરાટનું ચૈતન્ય હતું. તે સાથે અભિમાન ધરાવતો તે સ્પષ્ટ સ્વરૂપવાળો—સર્વ સ્થૂલ જીવોનો પાલક—વિષ્ણુ, પ્રધાન પુરુષ બને છે. તે આત્માથી આકાશ ઉત્પન્ન થયું; આકાશથી વાયુ; વાયુથી અગ્નિ; અગ્નિથી આપઃ (જળ); જળથી પૃથ્વી. એ પાંચ તન્માત્રાઓ ત્રિગુણાત્મક બને છે॥૬॥

Academic Translation

From the projecting power presided over by Hiraṇyagarbha there arose, predominated by tamas, the gross power called ‘ahaṅkāra’. That which is reflected in it was the consciousness of Virāṭ. He, identifying with that, becomes of a distinct form—the protector of all gross (beings), Viṣṇu, the primal person. From that Self arose space; from space, air; from air, fire; from fire, waters; from waters, earth. These become the five tanmātras, constituted of the three guṇas.
