Skanda Purana — Nagara Khanda, Shloka 12

नूनं मुक्तिर्भवेत्तेषां चिता भस्मनि गोष्पदम् । दृश्यते तत्र तज्ज्ञात्वा संस्कार्या ब्राह्मणा मृताः

nūnaṃ muktirbhavetteṣāṃ citā bhasmani goṣpadam | dṛśyate tatra tajjñātvā saṃskāryā brāhmaṇā mṛtāḥ

Assurément, la délivrance leur advient : là, dans les cendres du bûcher funéraire, on voit une marque semblable à une « empreinte de sabot de vache ». Connaissant ce signe, les brāhmanes défunts doivent y recevoir, comme il se doit, les rites funéraires et les saṃskāra appropriés.
