Shiva Purana — Vayaviya Samhita, Shloka 28

लिङ्गप्रतिष्ठा-माहात्म्यम् / The Greatness of Liṅga Installation

FAQs

The verse warns against spiritual forgetfulness and arrogance: forgetting the Supreme (here named as Nārāyaṇa) and disrespecting one’s source (father/creator) leads to loss of discernment. In Shaiva Siddhanta terms, humility and right recognition of divine order are prerequisites for grace (anugraha) and liberation.

Though Nārāyaṇa is named, the Vāyavīya section consistently teaches reverence to the Supreme and proper devotion. For a Shaiva practitioner, it reinforces that Saguna worship (including Śiva-liṅga pūjā) must be grounded in humility and remembrance of the Divine, not ego or contempt toward gurus, elders, or cosmic authorities.

A practical takeaway is daily smaraṇa (remembrance) with japa—especially the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—performed with humility. Complement it with simple worship such as offering water to the liṅga and maintaining respectful conduct toward parents, teachers, and devotees.
