Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha

Sthala Purana: Not a specific jyotirliṅga-māhātmya passage; it functions as a dharma-adharma preface listing mahāpātakas to highlight the reach of Śiva-stotra/japa as remedial upāya.

Significance: Frames Śiva as universal refuge (śaraṇya) even for the gravest offenders; motivates śaraṇāgati and nāma-saṅkīrtana as a purificatory discipline.

Type: stotra

FAQs

It lists mahāpātaka-like acts—betrayal, violence, and violation of refuge—as heavy forms of pāśa (bondage) that obscure the soul’s innate purity; in Shaiva Siddhanta, such darkness is removed not merely by fear, but by repentance, right conduct, and Shiva’s grace.

By highlighting extreme moral collapse, the text prepares the ground for the remedial power of Saguna Shiva worship—Linga-sevā, mantra, and devotion—which reorients the devotee from harm (hiṃsā) and betrayal toward śiva-dharma, making the heart fit for anugraha (divine grace).

A practical takeaway is sincere prāyaścitta with daily japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), Linga-abhiṣeka with a vow of non-harm and truthfulness, and wearing Tripuṇḍra/Bhasma as a reminder to restrain destructive impulses and live as a refuge-giver, not a refuge-breaker.
