Narada Purana — Purva Bhaga, Shloka 12

The Description of the Caturdaśī Vrata Observed throughout the Twelve Months

Ainsi, après avoir prié comme il se doit le Seigneur des dieux, l’observant du vœu doit s’étendre sur la terre nue, les sens maîtrisés, la colère vaincue, renonçant entièrement à toute jouissance.

FAQs

It defines the inner discipline of a vrata: prayer to the Divine followed by austerity—humility (sleeping on the ground), mastery of senses and anger, and renunciation of pleasures—so the vow becomes transformative rather than merely external.

Bhakti is shown here as reverent supplication to the Lord coupled with ethical self-restraint; devotion is strengthened when the devotee reduces distractions (bhoga) and steadies the mind through controlled conduct.

This verse primarily teaches ritual discipline (vrata-niyama) rather than a specific Vedāṅga; the practical takeaway is the prescribed conduct of the votary—ground-sleeping and restraint—as part of proper observance.
