Adhyāya 88 — निर्वाणदीक्षाकथनं
Teaching of the Nirvāṇa-Initiation

Dans le principe du vent (vāyu) résident le toucher et l’ouïe (comme organe sensoriel correspondant). Son objet est l’espace (ākāśa) ; sa qualité est le son. Son état est le transcendant « turyātīta », proclamé comme le cinquième.
Lord Agni (teaching the sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purana’s didactic dialogue frame)

Concept: Tattva-viveka culminating in turyātīta—consciousness beyond waking/dream/sleep and even turīya in some tantric-vedāntic enumerations.
Application: Meditate by tracing sensory qualities (sound/touch) back to their subtle causes and rest attention in the witness beyond all avasthās.
Khanda Section: Yoga-Vedanta (Tattva-nirupana: Bhuta–Tanmātra–Indriya mapping and states of consciousness)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A yogin contemplates a subtle cosmological chart: vāyu-tattva linked to touch, ear, space, and sound, with a luminous ‘fifth’ state labeled turyātīta above the four states.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala temple mural style, ochre-green palette, seated yogin with palm-leaf diagram of tattvas, swirling vāyu motifs, subtle glyphs for sparśa/śabda, radiant halo labeled turyātīta, flat decorative background","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, central yogin-sage with gold-leaf aura, stylized tattva-wheel showing vāyu, ear and touch icons, space dome, sound waves, ornate borders, rich reds and greens, embossed gold for the ‘fifth state’ crown","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting style, fine linework, instructional diagram aesthetic: labeled correspondences (vāyu–sparśa–śrotra–ākāśa–śabda), yogin in meditation, soft pastel wash, delicate ornamentation","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, scholar-yogin in a pavilion studying a cosmological chart, precise calligraphic labels, airy depiction of vāyu as flowing ribbons, sound as concentric waves, subdued jewel tones"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: गुणो ऽस्यावस्था = गुणः + अस्य + अवस्था; तुर्यातीता = तुर्य + अतीता (तत्पुरुष-समास).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 88 (tattva-nirūpaṇa sequence: bhūta–tanmātra–indriya and avasthā mapping)
It gives a technical tattva-schema: vāyu is associated with touch (sparśa), the ear as a sense-organ, space as the viṣaya, and sound as the guṇa, and it names the relevant higher avasthā as turyātīta (the ‘fifth’).
It exemplifies the Purana’s catalog-like teaching style by systematizing metaphysics (bhūta–indriya–guṇa correspondences) alongside yogic psychology (avasthās), showing the text’s coverage beyond narrative into technical doctrine.
By linking sensory functions and elemental principles to a transcendent state (turyātīta), it supports contemplative practice aimed at dis-identifying from sense-objects and stabilizing awareness in a higher, purifying state of consciousness.
