Agni Purana — Vastu-Pratishtha & Isana-kalpa, Shloka 47

Chapter 72 — स्नानविशेषादिकथनम्

Special Rules of Bathing, Mantra-Purification, and Sandhyā

FAQs

It prescribes a specific śrāddha/tarpaṇa offering sequence: make distinguished offerings to Ājyapā and Soma for the Pitṛs, and give the svadhā-offering to the grandfather using the mantra “oṃ hāṃ īśānāya pitre svadhā.”

It exemplifies the text’s practical ritual manual character by preserving precise mantra-usage, recipient specification (Soma, Ājyapā, Pitṛ tiers like pitāmaha), and offering-formulas—details that function like a procedural handbook alongside the Purāṇa’s many other disciplines.

Correct svadhā-offerings and mantra-directed tarpaṇa are taught as a means to satisfy and uplift ancestors, repay pitṛ-ṛṇa (ancestral debt), and secure purification and auspicious lineage merit (puṇya) for the performer.
