Chapter 59 — अधिवासनकथनं
Adhivāsana: The Rite of Inviting and Stabilizing Hari’s Presence
Lord Agni (teaching to Sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purāṇa’s encyclopedic discourse)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Cosmology","secondary_vidya":"Tantra","practical_application":"Continues tanmātra mapping to vyūhas/creator principle and the first material manifestation (waters); used for cosmological instruction and visualization in ritual/meditation.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Rasa and Gandha Principles; Primordial Creation of Waters","lookup_keywords":["Aniruddha","rasa-tanmātra","gandha","Brahmā","ap"],"quick_summary":"Aniruddha is identified with the taste-principle, and Brahmā with scent-form; together they initiate the first creation of waters. The verse compresses sensory subtlety and cosmogonic sequence into a doctrinal mapping."}
Concept: Cosmic sensory principles (tanmātras) are not merely psychological but ontological causes tied to divine/creator functions; waters arise early as a foundational element.
Application: For contemplation, trace sensory experience (taste/smell) back to subtle causes, reducing attachment to gross objects by seeing them as evolutes.
Khanda Section: Cosmology & Tattva (Srishti-krama / Panca-tanmatra-Vivecana)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Aniruddha as a subtle taste-essence and Brahmā as scent-essence jointly bringing forth vast primordial waters, with the first ripples of creation spreading outward.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural: Aniruddha and four-faced Brahmā above a stylized ocean; symbolic lotus, fragrance motifs near Brahmā, taste/nectar motifs near Aniruddha; bold outlines, sacred palette.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore: central ocean rendered in deep blues with gold highlights; Aniruddha with golden aura holding nectar-like vessel; Brahmā with lotus and fragrant garlands; heavy gold ornamentation and arch frame.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore: didactic scene with labels ‘rasa’ and ‘gandha’; gods gesturing toward emerging waters; fine linework, soft colors, clear compositional hierarchy.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature: expansive water surface with delicate wave patterns; Aniruddha and Brahmā in the sky with translucent halos; refined detailing, balanced negative space."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Kedar","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: rasamātraṃ = rasa + mātram; gandharūpakaṃ = gandha + rūpakam; apa ādau often appears as ‘ap ādau’ (apaḥ + ādau by sense); sasarja is perfect of √sṛj.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 59 (tanmātra and bhūta sṛṣṭi sequence)
It imparts tattva-vidyā (cosmological doctrine): mapping deities (Aniruddha, Brahmā) to tanmātras (taste, smell) and stating that primordial waters (āpaḥ) arise at the beginning of creation.
It demonstrates the Purāṇa’s synthesis of Vaiṣṇava theology (Vyūhas like Aniruddha) with Sāṃkhya-style elemental taxonomy (tanmātras and creation sequence), showing how metaphysics, theology, and cosmology are integrated in one compendium.
By linking creation to divine principles and subtle elements, it encourages contemplative understanding (jñāna) of the cosmos as ordered by the divine—supporting purification of worldview and devotion through correct cosmological insight.
