भूर्लोको ऽथ भुवर्लोकः स्वर्लोको ऽथ महर् जनः तपश् च ब्रह्मलोकश् च ब्रह्माण्डम् अखिलं शुभे
bhūrloko 'tha bhuvarlokaḥ svarloko 'tha mahar janaḥ tapaś ca brahmalokaś ca brahmāṇḍam akhilaṃ śubhe
O auspicious one, Bhūr-loka, Bhuvar-loka, Svarga-loka, and then Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka, and Brahmaloka—these, arrayed in ordered tiers, together form the entire brahmāṇḍa, the complete universe.
Sage Parāśara (addressing Maitreya)
Cosmic Hierarchy: Lokas
Concept: The universe is structured as a graded series of lokas within the brahmāṇḍa.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Contemplate the layered cosmos to cultivate humility and a sense of sacred order in life.
Vishishtadvaita: Cosmic plurality (many lokas) is held within a single ordered brahmāṇḍa under the Lord’s governance, supporting unity-with-difference.
Vishnu Form: Narayana (cosmic)
They present the classical Purāṇic vertical structure of the universe, showing how the brahmāṇḍa is organized into ascending realms from Bhūr up to Brahmaloka.
He enumerates the major upper worlds in sequence, framing them collectively as the complete brahmāṇḍa—an ordered totality rather than unrelated regions.
Even when Vishnu is not named in the line, the Vishnu Purana’s cosmology functions as an expression of divine sovereignty—an intelligible cosmic order ultimately grounded in the Supreme Reality identified with Vishnu.
