śṛṇoti ya imaṃ bhaktyā manor vaṃśam anukramāt tasya pāpam aśeṣaṃ vai praṇaśyaty amalātmanaḥ
Whoever listens with devotion to this lineage of Manu, recounted in proper succession—of that pure-souled person, all sin indeed is utterly destroyed.
Sage Parāśara (narrating to Maitreya)
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Merit of devotional listening to the genealogical narration.
Teaching: Devotional
Quality: encouraging and faith-building
Concept: Devotional śravaṇa of sacred lineage narration purifies the listener so that sins are extinguished.
Vedantic Theme: Moksha
Application: Adopt regular sacred listening (purāṇa-śravaṇa) with intention and ethical follow-through as a purification discipline.
Vishishtadvaita: Purification is effected by grace through bhakti-practices; the jīva becomes ‘amala’ while remaining a dependent self of the Lord.
Vishnu Form: Hari (name)
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse states that devoted listening to Manu’s lineage in proper order functions as a purifying act, destroying sin completely for the listener.
Parāśara presents genealogy not as mere history but as a sacred, ordered narration whose devotional hearing (śravaṇa with bhakti) yields inner purification.
The fruit promised—eradication of pāpa—is explicitly tied to bhakti, reflecting the Purana’s Vaishnava emphasis that sincere devotion sanctifies even narrative hearing.
