भैरवोत्पत्तिः ब्रह्मदर्पनिग्रहश्च
Origin of Bhairava and the Subduing of Brahmā’s Pride
तथा स्तुतस्तु भगवान्केतकेन सभातले । न मे त्वद्धारणं योग्यं सत्यवागहमीश्वरः
tathā stutastu bhagavānketakena sabhātale | na me tvaddhāraṇaṃ yogyaṃ satyavāgahamīśvaraḥ
Thus praised by the ketakī flower in the assembly hall, the Blessed Lord said: “You are not fit to be worn by Me; for I, the Lord, am a speaker of truth.”
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava
Sthala Purana: This belongs to the Liṅgodbhava episode: Ketakī falsely testifies to Brahmā about reaching the summit of the endless liṅga. Śiva, as satyavāk, rejects Ketakī as an offering—establishing ritual-ethical purity and condemning falsehood.
Significance: Teaches that worship must be grounded in satya; offerings associated with deceit are ritually disqualified, reinforcing dharma as a prerequisite for fruitful bhakti.
Offering: pushpa
Cosmic Event: Liṅgodbhava revelation: the infinite pillar conceals its limits (tirodhāna) and exposes false claims.
The verse highlights Shiva as Satya-vāk (the embodiment of truthful speech) and teaches that devotion must be aligned with dharma; offerings and praise are accepted when they are rooted in truth and purity.
In Saguna worship of Shiva as the Linga, the purity of upacāras (offerings) matters. Shiva’s refusal to be adorned with ketakī underscores that Linga worship is not merely ritual formality—it must reflect ethical truthfulness and reverence.
Practice satya (truthfulness) as a core vrata while performing Shiva-pūjā, and choose offerings consistent with śāstric guidance; complement worship with japa of the Panchākṣarī mantra, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” with an honest, disciplined mind.
