The Excellence of the Earthen Śiva Liṅga
यथा नदीषु सर्वासु ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा सुरापगा । तथा सर्वेषु लिंगेषु पार्थिवं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते
yathā nadīṣu sarvāsu jyeṣṭhā śreṣṭhā surāpagā | tathā sarveṣu liṃgeṣu pārthivaṃ śreṣṭhamucyate
Just as among all rivers the Surāpagā—the heavenly Gaṅgā—is regarded as the eldest and most excellent, so among all Liṅgas the earthen (pārthiva) Liṅga is declared the best.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
The verse elevates Pārthiva Liṅga worship as a supremely accessible Saguna practice: by shaping a simple earthen emblem with devotion, the devotee approaches Pati (Śiva) directly, loosening pāśa (bondage) and purifying the paśu (individual soul) toward grace and liberation.
It explicitly compares grades of sacred supports (like rivers) and declares the earthen Liṅga foremost—highlighting that Saguna worship through a consecrated symbol, performed with bhakti and mantra, is an authoritative means to commune with Śiva’s presence.
Perform Pārthiva Liṅga pūjā: make a small clay/earth liṅga, offer water (ideally Gaṅgā-jala if available), bilva leaves, and repeat the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” with steady attention; conclude with respectful visarjana (immersion/returning the earth).
