When such a sign arises—an indicator of suffering yet to come—the wise person should perform a Śānti-yajña, a rite of pacification, to soothe that fault and bring it to rest.
Sūta Gosvāmi (narrating Shiva Purana teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: The verse’s remedy (śānti-yajña) aligns with the Purāṇic-Āgamic idea that approaching Śiva through pacificatory worship converts impending duḥkha into śiva-anugraha (grace), restoring harmony for the household and community.
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: nurturing
Offering: dhupa
It teaches that when inauspicious indicators arise, a devotee should respond with dharmic purification—Śānti-yajña—so the impending distress is neutralized and the mind is steadied in devotion to Śiva.
Śānti-yajña is traditionally performed with Śiva as the presiding deity; it aligns the devotee with Saguna Śiva’s grace through ritual order, mantra, and offerings, seeking pacification of doṣa under Śiva’s protection.
A Śānti-yajña (pacificatory rite) is recommended; in Shaiva practice this is commonly supported by Śiva-mantra japa (e.g., the Pañcākṣarī) and purity observances to calm adverse influences.
