At the moment of her entry, what did the Gaṇeśas stationed at the threshold of the palace gate do? And when the Lord beheld them, what did He do then?
The sages at Naimiṣāraṇya (questioning Sūta Gosvāmin)
Tattva Level: pashu
Sthala Purana: Question about gaṇas at the threshold and Śiva’s response—an ‘antarāya/threshold’ motif rather than a Jyotirliṅga origin.
Significance: Highlights the liminal ‘dvāra’ (threshold) as a spiritual symbol: entry to the Lord’s presence requires permission, humility, and removal of obstacles (pāśa).
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: nurturing
The verse highlights the sanctity of approaching the divine realm: entry into Shiva’s space is governed by dharma and divine order, symbolized by the gaṇas at the threshold, reminding the seeker that grace (anugraha) follows proper approach and humility before Pati (Shiva).
The guarded doorway motif parallels temple worship of Saguna Shiva in the Liṅga: one approaches the sanctum through prescribed conduct (ācāra), purification, and reverence—outer discipline supporting inner surrender to Shiva’s presence.
Practice mindful “threshold-discipline”: purify before worship (bhasma/tripuṇḍra if appropriate), settle the mind with japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and enter the act of darśana with restraint, reverence, and focused attention.
