दक्षस्य यज्ञप्रवृत्तिः तथा ईश्वरवर्जितदेवसमागमः
Dakṣa’s Sacrificial Undertaking and the Devas’ Assembly without Īśvara
दक्ष उवाच । संति मे बहवो रुद्राः शूलहस्ताः कपर्दिनः । एकादशावस्थिता ये नान्यं वेद्मि महेश्वरम्
dakṣa uvāca | saṃti me bahavo rudrāḥ śūlahastāḥ kapardinaḥ | ekādaśāvasthitā ye nānyaṃ vedmi maheśvaram
Dakṣa said: “I have many Rudras, bearing tridents and wearing matted hair, established as the Eleven. I acknowledge no other Maheśvara besides them.”
Daksha
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
The verse highlights a limited understanding—equating the Supreme Lord with a set of manifested Rudra forms. From a Shaiva Siddhanta lens, the many Rudras can be divine manifestations, yet Pati (Maheshvara) ultimately transcends numerical limitation and is the single supreme Lord behind all forms.
Rudras with trident and matted hair indicate Saguna (with attributes) manifestations. Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana points to the one Maheshvara who pervades and surpasses all such forms—Saguna devotion leading the seeker toward recognition of the one Supreme behind the many.
Meditate on Maheshvara as one reality appearing as many Rudra forms, repeating the Panchakshara mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and contemplate the trident-bearing Rudra as a symbol of Shiva’s mastery over the threefold bonds (pāśa) that limit the soul (paśu).
