Umāyāḥ Kriyāyoga-Rahasya
The Esoteric Teaching on Umā’s Kriyāyoga
यः कार्त्तिकस्य मार्गस्य पौषस्य तपसस्तथा । तपस्यस्य सिते पक्षे तृतीयायां व्रतं चरेत्

Whoever performs the vowed rite on the third lunar day (tṛtīyā) of the bright fortnight in the month of Phālguna (Tapasya)—and likewise in Kārttika, Mārgaśīrṣa, Pauṣa, and Māgha—practises a purifying Śaiva discipline that leads the devotee toward the grace of Lord Śiva.

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Monthly tithi-based vrata (śukla-tṛtīyā) is framed as a śuddhi-sādhana that ripens the bound soul (paśu) toward Śiva’s anugraha through regular discipline across successive months.
It praises disciplined observance (vrata) on an auspicious tithi across sacred months, emphasizing that steady devotion and restraint purify the soul (paśu) and dispose it toward Śiva’s grace (anugraha), central to Shaiva Siddhanta.
A vrata on specific lunar days is typically fulfilled through Saguna worship—such as Linga-pūjā with mantra and offerings—using time (kāla) as a sacred support to focus the mind on Śiva as Pati, the liberating Lord.
Observe a tṛtīyā vrata in the bright fortnight during the named months—commonly including purity, fasting or regulated diet, japa (e.g., Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and Linga worship with devotion.
