महापातकवर्णनम् (Mahāpātaka-varṇanam) — “Description of Great Sins and Their Consequences”
तद्भार्य्यापुत्रमित्रेषु यश्चावज्ञां करोति च । एवं सुवाचकस्यापि गुरोर्धर्मानुदर्शिनः
tadbhāryyāputramitreṣu yaścāvajñāṃ karoti ca | evaṃ suvācakasyāpi gurordharmānudarśinaḥ
And whoever shows contempt toward his wife, son, and friends—likewise, whoever treats with disrespect even a well-spoken Guru who reveals the path of dharma—falls into grave fault.
Suta Goswami (narrating the teaching tradition of the Shiva Purana within the Umāsaṃhitā)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
The verse frames disrespect as a spiritual downfall: contempt toward one’s close relations and especially toward the dharma-teaching Guru damages inner purity, which is essential for Shiva-bhakti and liberation in the Shaiva Siddhanta spirit.
Linga worship is not merely external ritual; it requires humility and right conduct. Disrespect toward the Guru who guides dharma undermines the very attitude (bhāva) needed for fruitful Saguna Shiva worship and for receiving mantra and worship-methods correctly.
Practice Guru-vandana and self-restraint before worship—offer respectful salutations, maintain disciplined speech and conduct, and then undertake japa (especially the Panchakshara, Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with humility; this supports purity for bhasma, rudraksha, and Linga-puja practices.
