Description of the Marks of the Shadow-Person
शंकर उवाच । शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामिच्छायापुरुषलक्षणम् । यज्ज्ञात्वा पुरुषः सम्यक्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
śaṃkara uvāca | śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmicchāyāpuruṣalakṣaṇam | yajjñātvā puruṣaḥ samyaksarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
Śaṅkara said: “Listen, O Devī; I shall declare the marks of the Chhāyā-Puruṣa, the ‘shadow-person.’ Knowing this rightly, one is wholly freed from all sins.”
Lord Shiva (Shankara)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
The verse highlights a Shaiva Siddhanta principle: right knowledge (samyag-jñāna) imparted by Pati (Śiva) purifies the pashu (individual) and loosens the bonds of pāśa, leading toward liberation from sin and limitation.
Śiva speaks as the compassionate teacher; in Saguna worship—especially Linga-upāsanā—devotion is paired with understanding. The verse frames knowledge of Śiva’s teachings as a purifier, supporting Linga worship as both ritual and inner realization.
The direct takeaway is śravaṇa and manana—listening to Śiva’s instruction and reflecting correctly. In Shaiva practice this is commonly supported by japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and disciplined purity (bhasma/rudrākṣa observances) to stabilize the mind for right understanding.
