Bhāratavarṣa–Navabheda-Vyavasthā
The Nine Divisions of Bhāratavarṣa and Its Sacred Geography
वर्षश्चायं तु कालेय भौम स्वर्गोपमो मतः । सर्वस्य सुखदः काले जरारोगविवर्जितः
varṣaścāyaṃ tu kāleya bhauma svargopamo mataḥ | sarvasya sukhadaḥ kāle jarārogavivarjitaḥ
“O Kāleya, this year on earth is regarded as heaven-like. In due time it becomes a giver of happiness to all, being free from old age and disease.”
Lord Shiva (narrating within the Umāsaṃhitā discourse)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Shakti Form: Umā
Role: nurturing
Cosmic Event: didactic praise of a time/condition on earth likened to svarga; freedom from jarā-roga as a grace-like boon
It teaches that when life is aligned with dharma and Shiva’s grace, even earthly existence can become “heaven-like,” culminating—at the proper ripening of time (kāla)—in wellbeing and freedom from the afflictions symbolized by old age and disease.
By honoring Saguna Shiva through Linga-worship, the devotee sanctifies time and experience; the verse frames Shiva’s auspicious governance of kāla as the force that transforms worldly life into a higher state leading toward liberation.
Regular Shiva-upāsanā—daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), application of tripuṇḍra-bhasma, and devotionally offering water to the Linga—supports inner purity and steadiness so that Shiva’s auspicious “due time” bears fruit.
