यममार्गे सुखदायकधर्माः
Dharmas that Grant Ease on the Path to Yama
अन्नदः पूजयेद्व्यासः सुशीलस्तु विमत्सरः । क्रोधमुत्पतितं हित्वा दिवि चेह महत्सुखम्
annadaḥ pūjayedvyāsaḥ suśīlastu vimatsaraḥ | krodhamutpatitaṃ hitvā divi ceha mahatsukham
One who gives food, honors the wise—like Vyāsa—, is of good conduct and free from envy, and abandons anger the moment it arises, attains great happiness both here in this world and in heaven.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Ethical purification (non-envy, good conduct, immediate abandonment of anger) combined with annadāna and honoring the scriptural teacher is presented as a two-world fruit (iha + divi), a hallmark of dharma leading toward Śiva’s grace.
Role: liberating
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that Shaiva dharma is not only ritual but purified conduct: charity (annadāna), reverence to the guru/scriptural tradition (Vyāsa), freedom from envy, and immediate renunciation of anger lead to upliftment and lasting well-being.
Linga-worship is strengthened by inner purity; offering to Shiva while retaining envy and anger is incomplete. This verse highlights the ethical foundation that makes Saguna Shiva-bhakti fruitful and spiritually transformative.
Practice annadāna and guru-pūjā as part of Shiva worship, and adopt moment-to-moment vigilance: when anger arises, drop it immediately—supporting japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with a calm, non-envious mind.
