Śiva–Arjuna Yuddha and the Subjugation of Pride (Śiva-parīkṣā)
आयुधानि शिवस्सो वै ह्यर्जुनस्याच्छिनत्तदा । कवचानि च सर्वाणि शरीरं केवलं स्थितम्
āyudhāni śivasso vai hyarjunasyācchinattadā | kavacāni ca sarvāṇi śarīraṃ kevalaṃ sthitam
Then the Lord Śiva indeed severed Arjuna’s weapons, and all his armours as well; only the bare body remained standing.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
The verse shows Śiva as Pati (the Lord) who can strip away all external supports—power, weapons, and protective identities—so the soul recognizes its dependence on divine grace rather than ego and capability.
As Saguna Śiva, the Lord acts within the world to correct the devotee and remove pride. Linga-worship embodies the same truth: the formless Supreme is approached through a gracious form that purifies the devotee and redirects them to surrender.
Practice surrender through japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” combined with humility in worship; offer one’s ‘weapons’ (anger, pride, control) inwardly, and contemplate Śiva as the sole refuge when all outer protections fail.
