Śiva–Arjuna Yuddha and the Subjugation of Pride (Śiva-parīkṣā)
Even the Vedas cannot count Your attributes. O Lord, my understanding is small—how then could I ever describe You?
A devotee/narrator within the Shatarudrasaṃhitā addressing Lord Shiva (Rudra) in praise
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Type: stotra
It teaches Shaiva humility: Shiva (Pati) is infinite and transcends complete description, while the individual soul (pashu) is limited; true devotion begins by admitting this limitation and surrendering to Shiva’s grace.
The verse supports Saguna worship (stuti, linga-arcana) as a practical means for finite beings to approach the Infinite; even if Shiva is ultimately beyond words (nirguna), devotees relate through form, name, and worship as compassionate access-points.
A simple takeaway is humble japa and stuti—especially Panchakshara mantra japa (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—offered with the feeling that Shiva’s greatness exceeds speech and mind.
