Nabhaga-Upākhyāna: The Account of Nabhaga and Shiva-Jñāna
पितामहोऽम्बरीषस्य नभगो यः प्रकीर्तितः । तच्चरितं शृणु मुने यस्मै ज्ञानमदाच्छिवः
pitāmaho'mbarīṣasya nabhago yaḥ prakīrtitaḥ | taccaritaṃ śṛṇu mune yasmai jñānamadācchivaḥ
Nabhaga, famed as the grandsire of Ambarīṣa—listen, O sage, to his sacred account, to whom Lord Śiva bestowed spiritual knowledge.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse frames a guru-śiṣya style transmission where Śiva grants jñāna to Nabhaga, functioning like a localized ‘jñāna-sthala’ motif rather than a liṅga-sthala origin.
Significance: Hearing (śravaṇa) of Śiva-bestowed jñāna is presented as purifying and conducive to right knowledge.
Role: teaching
It introduces Nabhaga’s sanctified life as a proof that Śiva directly grants liberating knowledge (jñāna) to worthy souls, making divine grace the decisive cause for inner awakening.
By emphasizing that Śiva personally bestows jñāna, it supports Saguna Śiva worship (including Linga devotion) as a living relationship where the Lord responds with guidance and revelation leading toward realization of the Supreme.
The implied practice is śravaṇa (devotional listening) to Śiva-kathā with faith—supported by Shaiva sādhanā such as japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to become fit for Śiva’s grace-bestowed knowledge.
