Bhairavaśāpavṛttāntaḥ
The Episode of Bhairava’s Curse and Consolation
नन्दीश्वर उवाच । इत्थं यदाऽभवच्छप्तो भैरवश्शिवया मुने । हाहाकारो महानासीद्दुःखमाप स लीलया
nandīśvara uvāca | itthaṃ yadā'bhavacchapto bhairavaśśivayā mune | hāhākāro mahānāsīdduḥkhamāpa sa līlayā
Nandīśvara said: “Thus, O sage, when Bhairava was cursed by Śivā, a great outcry arose; yet he accepted that sorrow as līlā, a divine play.”
Nandishvara (Nandi)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Bhairava
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It teaches a Shaiva Siddhanta attitude of surrender: even when karmic consequences or divine injunctions bring pain, the devotee sees it within Shiva’s governance and accepts it as līlā, turning suffering into a means of inner purification and steadfast bhakti.
Bhairava and Śivā are Saguna expressions of the Supreme Lord’s power and compassion; the verse points to trusting Shiva’s manifest forms and their commands. Linga-worship similarly trains the devotee to accept Shiva’s will, transforming emotional upheaval into devotion and discipline.
Practice japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with a mindset of surrender, and steady the mind through simple daily Shiva-upasana (offering water to the Linga, or wearing Rudraksha with remembrance), cultivating acceptance of outcomes as Shiva’s līlā.
