Gṛhapati’s Vow: Turning Grief into Mṛtyuñjaya–Mahākāla Sādhana
tvayedaṃ sthāpitaṃ liṃgaṃ tava nāmnā bhaviṣyati | agnīśvara iti khyātaṃ sarvatejovibṛṃhaṇam
“This Liṅga has been established by you; therefore it shall be known by your name. It will be famed as Agnīśvara, the Lord who augments and radiates all brilliance (tejas).”
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: Śiva declares that because Agni established this liṅga, it will bear Agni’s name—Agnīśvara—renowned for expanding all tejas. This is a classic Purāṇic naming-etymology (nāma-nirukti) tied to installation (sthāpana).
Significance: Establishes a specific liṅga’s identity and fruit: worship increases spiritual radiance/tejas and grants protection related to fire.
Role: nurturing
Offering: pushpa
The verse teaches that when a devotee establishes the Śiva-Liṅga with devotion, Śiva sanctifies that act by granting a specific, living presence and name—here, Agnīśvara—signifying the expansion of tejas (spiritual radiance) through Śiva’s grace.
It affirms Saguna worship: the formless Pati (Śiva) accepts the Liṅga as a tangible focus for devotion. Naming the Liṅga as Agnīśvara indicates a particular mode of Śiva’s approachable manifestation, through which devotees receive upliftment and inner luminosity.
Establish and worship a Śiva-Liṅga with steady bhakti—perform abhiṣeka, offer lamp/fire (dīpa) in the spirit of Agnīśvara, and meditate on Śiva as the source of all tejas; japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) supports this focus.
